Esau and Jacob were fraternal twins, but Esau was the first born. According to the cultures of the time, he was therefore entitled to the blessings appropriate to his birth order. Jacob, however, saw the value of this new monotheistic heritage as Esau did not. Esau was a man of the field who liked to hunt. Jacob was a man of tents, a euphemism for “sanctuary”. Upon coming home after a hunt, Esau pleaded with Jacob to give him some of the lentil stew he was preparing lest “die from hunger”. Jacob hesitated, telling him to trade his birthright for the food. Esau quickly and willingly made the trade. Thus did Esau spurn his birthright, according to the Torah. And thus did Jacob fight for and earn that legacy. Jacob saw the value, Esau did not. So should we all see the value of Torah.

As Abraham honored her during her life, he now honors her in death. As Sara was our first matriarch, it is fitting that her sepulcher be appropriate. The text discusses how Abraham approaches the Hittites on whose land is the Cave of Machpelah. He feels this is the most appropriate place for Sara. It is on the land of Ephron, ostensibly the leader of the Hittites. Abraham must negotiate with him. Our sages have analyzed the text and derived that Ephron was an opportunist, seeing Abraham’s grief and vulnerability at losing his wife, he seeks to take advantage. At first Ephron offers to give Abraham the cave. Abraham insists on paying for the land and Ephron offers an exorbitant price while downplaying it. Abraham does not argue or disagree, and gives Ephron the price asked. Once again Abraham demonstrates his priorities and spiritual evolution. He minimizes the physical (the money) to focus on the spiritual (a suitable resting place for Sara). Abraham showed us that honor to Hashem is the most important aspect of physical life, and that he was rewarded handsomely for it. Let us all emulate his traits.

Abraham immediately offers them hospitality, something he likes to do. He does not know that these are angels, malahim sent by Hashem with three messages: Abraham (and Lot will be healed); Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Zoar will be destroyed because of their wickedness; and Sarai (Sarah) will give birth. Abraham, a righteous man, pleads for those cities that if, finally, 10 righteous people are found there, they will be destroyed. Of course Hashem knew they wouldn’t, but this give Abraham an opportunity to demonstrate his higher sense of justice. This is an example to us all, especially following fairly closely after the High Holidays. The sages have praised those that can turn an enemy into a friend. How much did Abraham always look for and see the best in people when they didn’t see it themselves. Abraham and Sarah are our “parents”; how good of us to follow their example. Sara da a luz a Isaac y Abraham despide a Agar e Ismael.

It is interesting that we are first introduced to them as “Avram” and “Sarai”. It later becomes a positive commandment to refer to them by their new “Hebrew” names. This is also the basis of us Jews getting Hebrew names. Also, many commentators refer to them by their new names in Torah commentaries despite how they are identified because of that, and we will do the same. Hashem comes to Abraham and tells him to leave his home and his and go to a place where God will show him to a place he does not know. Consider both the physical and spiritual implications. Hashem wants to get him away from the influence of the idolatry and paganism of those people and become the world’s first monotheist. Why Abraham? We see examples of Abraham’s graciousness and kindness to everyone. Even though Lot, his nephew whom he is taking care of, is younger, Abraham gives him the choice of land to settle after their respective herdsmen start bickering about land and they need to separate. When Lot is captured during a war, Abraham assembles his men to go rescue him. As Abraham is our first Patriarch, let us study his behavior and use him as our role model. It is through him that we are all Jews.

Hashem’s ultimate creation, humankind, had grown corrupt in the ten generations from Adam. They freely engaged in robbery and the human-made courts had abrogated their responsibility in not punishing them. With the threat of consequences, people became more bold in their disregard for the rights of others. Noah was righteous in his generation. Does this mean that he was a righteous man or just the best of the corrupt people of him time? Does it really matter? Righteous is righteous. In either case, his righteousness could have been an example to his fellows. Instead, they pursued their criminal activities. It took Noah one hundred and twenty years to build the ark from the gopher wood. This was so people could ask him what he was doing, and he could inform them of the impending flood that would wipe out beings all over the Earth. This would allow them to repent and prevent their doom. They didn’t and Hashem did. Noah and his family survived, again because of his righteousness, to rebuild humanity from an ostensibly better stock.
