Parashat Vayera is the 4th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.
Torah Portion: Genesis 18:1-22:24
Vayera (“He Appeared”) opens as guests inform Abraham that Sarah will give birth. Despite Abraham’s attempts to convince God otherwise, God destroys the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Sarah gives birth to Isaac, and Abraham sends away Hagar and Ishmael. At God’s command, Abraham prepares to sacrifice Isaac, but an angel of God tells Abraham to offer a ram instead. [1]

As Abram (Abraham) is convalescing from his circumcision, three visitors appear. Abraham immediately offers them hospitality, something he likes to do. He does not know that these are angels, malahim sent by Hashem with three messages: Abraham (and Lot will be healed); Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim and Zoar will be destroyed because of their wickedness; and Sarai (Sarah) will give birth.
Abraham, a righteous man, pleads for those cities that if, finally, 10 righteous people are found there, they will be destroyed. Of course Hashem knew they wouldn’t, but this give Abraham an opportunity to demonstrate his higher sense of justice.
This is an example to us all, especially following fairly closely after the High Holidays. The sages have praised those that can turn an enemy into a friend. How much did Abraham always look for and see the best in people when they didn’t see it themselves. Abraham and Sarah are our “parents”; how good of us to follow their example.

Vayera ("Él apareció") abre cuando los invitados le informan a Abraham que Sara dará a luz. A pesar de los intentos de Abraham de convencer a Dios de lo contrario, Dios destruye las ciudades de Sodoma y Gomorra. Sara da a luz a Isaac y Abraham despide a Agar e Ismael. Por orden de Dios, Abraham se prepara para sacrificar a Isaac, pero un ángel de Dios le dice a Abraham que ofrezca un carnero en su lugar. [1]

Mientras Abram (Abraham) está convaleciente de su circuncisión, aparecen tres visitantes. Abraham inmediatamente les ofrece hospitalidad, algo que le gusta hacer. Él no sabe que estos son ángeles, malahim enviados por Hashem con tres mensajes: Abraham (y Lot será sanado); Sodoma, Gomorra, Adma, Zeboim y Zoar serán destruidas a causa de su maldad; y Sarai (Sara) dará a luz.
Abraham, un hombre justo, ruega por esas ciudades que si, finalmente, se encuentran allí 10 personas justas, serán destruidas. Por supuesto, Hashem sabía que no lo harían, pero esto le dio a Abraham la oportunidad de demostrar su mayor sentido de la justicia.
Este es un ejemplo para todos nosotros, especialmente siguiendo bastante de cerca después de las Altas Fiestas. Los sabios han elogiado a aquellos que pueden convertir a un enemigo en un amigo. Cuánto siempre buscó y vio Abraham lo mejor en las personas cuando ellas mismas no lo veían. Abraham y Sara son nuestros “padres”; qué bueno de nosotros seguir su ejemplo.
