  • Psalm 94: Psalm for Yom Revi'i, Wednesday, Fourth day of the week.

Each morning, Jews end their Shacharit, or morning service, with a psalm of the day. It is chosen to correspond with that day of creation, as well as keep track of the days leading up to Shabbat. Considering the brutality that Hamas inflicted against innocent Israeli civilians, and the corresponding denial of those who spew hate against the Jewish nation, this psalm is especially timely in addressing that: Psalm 94 God of retribution, LORD,God of retribution, appear! Rise up, judge of the earth, give the arrogant their deserts! How long shall the wicked, O LORD,how long shall the wicked exult, shall they utter insolent speech, shall all evildoers vaunt themselves? They crush Your people, O LORD,they afflict Your very own; they kill the widow and the stranger;they murder the fatherless, thinking, “The LORD does not see it,the God of Jacob does not pay heed.” Take heed, you most brutish people;fools, when will you get wisdom? Shall He who implants the ear not hear,He who forms the eye not see? Shall He who disciplines nations not punish,He who instructs men in knowledge? The LORD knows the designs of men to be futile. Happy is the man whom You discipline, O LORD,the man You instruct in Your teaching, to give him tranquillity in times of misfortune, until a pit be dug for the wicked. For the LORD will not forsake His people; He will not abandon His very own. Judgment shall again accord with justiceand all the upright shall rally to it. Who will take my part against evil men?Who will stand up for me against wrongdoers? Were not the LORD my help,I should soon dwell in silence. When I think my foot has given way,Your faithfulness, O LORD, supports me. When I am filled with cares,Your assurance soothes my soul. Shall the seat of injustice be Your partner, that frames mischief by statute? They band together to do away with the righteous;they condemn the innocent to death. But the LORD is my haven;my God is my sheltering rock. He will make their evil recoil upon them, annihilate them through their own wickedness;the LORD our God will annihilate them. Psalm 95 Come, let us sing joyously to the LORD,raise a shout for our rock and deliverer; let us come into His presence with praise;let us raise a shout for Him in song! For the LORD is a great God,the great king of all divine beings.

  • Investigation underway after Queens HS students reportedly riot over a teacher’s support for Israel

Investigation underway after Queens high school students reportedly riot over a teacher's support for Israel - Jewish Telegraphic Agency (jta.org) My email to Mayor Adams (we should all go on and send him something): "That a teacher at Hillcrest HS supporting Israel was subjected to the wrath of an out of control mob is deplorable and reprehensible. As a former police officer, you know that consequences are the only way to stop further actions. The students involved need to be expelled and charged with Assault, Attempted Battery, False Imprisonment and Kidnapping. By making an example, this will probably detract further incidents as would-be perpetrators see that these actions have real and dire consequences. Thank you for your support."

  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (2 December 2023): Parashat Vayishlach 5784

Parashat Vayishlach 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת וַיִּשְׁלַח 2 December 2023 / 19 Kislev 5784 D'var Torah on YouTube Parashat Vayishlach is the 8th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Genesis 32:4-36:43 Vayishlach (“He Sent”) follows Jacob and his family as Jacob wrestles with a man (commonly understood as an angel), is renamed Israel, and reconciles with his brother, Esau. Jacob’s daughter, Dina, is raped by a Hivite prince, and her brothers sack a city in response. Rachel dies as she gives birth to Jacob's youngest child, Benjamin. [1] Triennial year 2 1: 34:1-4 · 4 p’sukim · 2: 34:5-12 · 8 p’sukim · 3: 34:13-17 · 5 p’sukim · 4: 34:18-23 · 6 p’sukim · 5: 34:24-31 · 8 p’sukim · 6: 35:1-11 · 11 p’sukim · 7: 35:12-15 · 4 p’sukim · maf: 35:12-15 · 4 p’sukim · Haftarah: Obadiah 1:1-21 · 21 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary American Jewish University Hertz Chumash: pp. 127 – 130 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 122 – 134) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 180 – 189 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 170 – 197) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp.206 – 213 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 198 – 220) After Jacob and his family left Haran in the company of Laban, they ended up in Shechem. Dinah, surrounded by men, ventured out to meet some peers there in Shechem. She is accosted and molested by the king’s son. This prince is overcome by emotions and lust and wants to make Dinah his wife. (Consider the similarity to the conclusion of Parashat Genesis where the “sons of Elohim took the daughters of Adam as their wives, and this was the precursor to the Flood). Jacob and his family agree as long as the males of Shechem circumcise themselves. The men agree considering that marriages between the two peoples would give them access to Jacob’s riches. During the third when they’re recovering, Levi and Simeon sneak into the city and slaughter all the men as retribution for treating their sister as a harlot. Consider that the interesting issue in our triennial section of this Parashat is not just the content but the interpretation and analysis. Rabbi Dr. Hertz considers this slaughter an abomination. His analysis is that they acted rashly and unjustly and put the rest of the family in jeopardy as other surrounding tribes may consider them a threat and seek to destroy them. Other commentators, as in the Artscroll Chumash, believe that the brothers were justified in meting out justice to people who had not respect for morality and others that were complicit. In deciding for ourselves, consider the beginning of the next chapter which concludes our triennial portion. Jacob then moves his family and assets to Beth-el where he sets up an altar. The surrounding peoples are afraid of them and let them be. Maybe this is the answer to the analysis. Judge for yourself…. Juzgue usted mismo….

Kabbalah Thought for this week "A good computer depends on a powerful microprocessor, but if a tiny, insignificant wire is absent or defective, the entire system is rendered inoperable. All the elements...are equally important. Similarly, evryone inthis world is as important as the most righteous sage, including those we might consider to be a lower level of spirituality than ourselves. It behoovesus to stop judgening others, and to recognize that every person plays a vital role in the spiritual structure of humanity." Many people are confused about the term “Israelite”. First of all, “Israeli” refers to a citizen of the State of Israel. While most Israelis are Jewish, some are not. An “Israelite” is someone who is descended from Jacob, our third Patriarch, who is also known by his spiritual name, “Israel”. Jacob travels back to Haran to the family of his wife’s brother, Laban, who is now the patriarch of the clan there. After having a vision of a ladder with angels traveling up and down, he meets with Hashem who assures him that He will be with him and his descendants will be blessed and thrive. Jacob meets Rachel at the well outside their home and falls in love with her. He marries first her sister Leah, then Rachel, and also has each of their handmaidens, Bilhah and Zilpah, as his concubines. With them, he has the first eleven of his twelve sons that will give birth to their respective tribes. His twelfth son is yet to be born. After working for Laban for twenty years, Jacob takes his family and his belongings to settle in Canaan. Laban doesn’t want Jacob to leave since his assets increased manyfold under Jacob’s care. Of course, Laban complains that Jacob is taking his daughters and grandchildren away from him, but his subterfuge is evident about who he is. Likewise, when Jacob complains that Laban changed their agreement “hundreds of times”, and thus can’t be trusted. The fact that nevertheless Jacob kept his part of the agreement is the model of integrity in the workplace. We always stick to our part of the agreement despite what our managers do, and remember, you can, as Jacob did, always leave for a better, fairer agreement or start your own business.

  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (18 November 2023): Parashat Toldot 5784

https://youtu.be/7qTC-UELc7I Parashat Toldot 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת תּוֹלְדוֹת 18 November 2023 / 5 Kislev 5784 Parashat Toldot is the 6th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Genesis 25:19-28:9 Toldot (“Generations”) opens with the births of Isaac and Rebecca’s twins, Jacob and Esau. Esau sells his birthright to Jacob in exchange for soup. Isaac and Rebecca travel to Gerar, where Isaac makes a peace treaty with King Abimelech. Isaac gives Jacob the blessing meant for Esau, and Jacob runs away to his uncle Laban. [1] Triennial year 2 1: 26:23-29 · 7 p’sukim · 2: 26:30-33 · 4 p’sukim · 3: 26:34-27:4 · 6 p’sukim · 4: 27:5-13 · 9 p’sukim · 5: 27:14-17 · 4 p’sukim · 6: 27:18-23 · 6 p’sukim · 7: 27:24-27 · 4 p’sukim · maf: 27:24-27 · 4 p’sukim · Haftarah: Malachi 1:1-2:7 · 21 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary Hertz Chumash: pp. 96 – 99 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 93 – 101) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 132 – 139 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 124 – 143) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp. 152 – 157 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 146 – 161) Our triennial portion opens up as Isaac and Rebekah interact with Abimelech, King of Gerar in Philistia and Phicol, his general. However, let’s go back a few verses for an interesting parallel to today. Once again, there is a famine in the land that now affects Isaac and Rebekah. Hashem tells them specifically not to go to Egypt as Abraham and Sarah did, so they end up in Gerar. Isaac and Rebekah settle down there and Hashem blesses them. They become successful: “Isaac sowed in that land and reaped a hundredfold the same year. יהוה blessed him, and the man grew richer and richer until he was very wealthy: he acquired flocks and herds, and a large household, so that the Philistines envied him.” This is a story of antisemitism that we have seen repeated throughout history. We Jews settle in a land and get busy working to raise our families. We are successful and the native people become jealous. Later in the Parashat, Abimelech and Phicol “now see plainly that יהוה has been with you, and we thought: Let there be a sworn treaty between our two parties, between you and us. Let us make a pact with you that you will not do us harm, just as we have not molested you but have always dealt kindly with you and sent you away in peace. From now on, be you blessed of יהוה !” Isn’t this what is going on in Israel today? Her neighbors, once enemies, see that Israel is successful in battle and commerce. They have decided that there is more to be gained by being Israel’s ally than enemy. Thus we have had the Abraham accords. May this new resolve lead to victory for Israel and peace in the region.

  • Rabbi Shmuel's Weekly Newsletter for week of 5 November 2023

Kabbalah Thought for this week "Rabbi Elazar comments that the apparent frustrations and disappointments of life are in fact blessings in disguise. He calls them 'holy and necessary', because they establish the limits with whcih we can find authentic happiness. 'The sun also rises and the sun goes down'. This is how we overcome inner weaknesses that impede our progress toward the Light." From the Talmud A person should always...pray for success to the One to Whom wealth and property belong, as ultimately there is no trade that does not include both poverty and wealth, since a person can become rich from any profession. Poverty does not come from a particular trade, nor does wealth come from a particular trade, but rather, all is in accordance with a person’s merit. Therefore, one should choose a clean and easy trade, and pray to God for success. He sends his main servant and disciple, his chief of staff, back to his family in Haran to find a suitable wife. While he is not named, the sages understood him to be Eliezer. Eliezer is laden with gifts for the dowry. Having learned from Abraham, Eliezer prays to Hashem that the Isaac’s future wife will have the spirituality and honor that will partner with Isaac in this new religion, the adoration of the one, true G-d. Rebecca’s display of concern for Eliezer and his entourage, as well as his camels, convinces him he’s found the right mate. No one could be happier at the prospect of Rebecca marrying Isaac than her brother Laban, who will figure prominently in the next generation. Laban usurps his father in discussing his sister’s fate after seeing all the wealth displayed by Abraham’s messengers. Rebecca decides to accompany Eliezer back to meet Isaac and becomes his wife, our second Matriarch. Would it be proper to consider that Rebecca as well was impressed by the wealth and hence her quick consent? Consider her later actions that testify to her devotion to Abraham’s legacy and the worship of a righteous G-d that commands us to love the stranger and respect our fellows. She thus proves that this is her primary consideration.

At first, there were three “guests” appearing before Abraham. Each guest was an angel, a messenger of Hashem, with their own specific mission. Since the first completed their mission of informing Abraham and Sarah of her giving birth to an heir, his mission was complete, and he left. Lot, like his uncle Abraham, hosts the two angels. The townspeople hear of it and attempt to kidnap them from Lot’s house. To Lot’s credit, he at least tries to protect them. This is more proof of the the wickedness of the people of Sodom. Lot, his wife and his two daughters escape. Unfortunately, Lot’s wife disregards the angels warning to not look back and slows down and gets caught in the onslaught. Fearing that they are the only people left, Lot’s daughters get physically intimate with him to have heirs. One of those heirs is Moab. One of their descendants, is, of course, Ruth who is the ancestress of King David. Sara da a luz a Isaac y Abraham despide a Agar e Ismael.
