  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (September 17, 2022): "Parashat Ki Tavo" 5782

https://youtu.be/rMKdgIKkiw4 Parashat Ki Tavo 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת כִּי־תָבוֹא 17 September 2022 / 21 Elul 5782 Parashat Ki Tavo is the 50th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8 Ki Tavo (“When You Come”) opens by describing the ceremony of the first fruit offering (bikkurim) and the declaration made upon the completion of tithing. It concludes with a detailed description of blessings that follow obedience to God's laws and curses that come with their desecration. It is a repeat of the text found in Leviticus chapter 26. It starts out with a few verses stating the rewards if the Israelites observe the covenant and do the mitzvot of Torah. The chapter then goes on for fifty-three verses to discuss the consequences, punishments actually, of straying from the covenant. These are not just the opposite of the rewards but spare no verbiage emphasizing very bleak conditions. Isn’t it interesting the number of verses to discuss the punishments vs. the rewards? As it has been stated previously, we Israelites are a “stiff-necked people”. There have been many commentaries that seek to resolve the application of these curses. Have we Jews been enduring this punishment over the last millennia that explain the oppression wreaked upon us? Are there some offences we’ve committed that justify those acts? Perhaps we can use the discussions of such warnings as “The Rebellious Son” as a model. This is a judgment that the sages deem to not be literally but rather serve as a warning. Perhaps this is a similar admonition. Consider that these decrees are also not to be taken literally but rather emphasize the idea that we should remain faithful to our covenant with Hashem and observe the commandments. This is what makes us strong as a people. We don’t win wars by might, nor prosperity by skillful and artful business practices alone, but rather by Hashem’s hand are we a prosperous and successful people. Observing our commandments is what gives us the resolve to be successful in our undertakings and overcome challenges. We are the people of the Book, and the Tohahah reminds us to remain so.

Most of us can imagine sitting and listening to Moses discuss these laws and wonder if there’s going to be a test and hopefully it will be multiple choice and not fill in the blanks! Seriously, what most of these laws have in common, especially in our triennial reading, is making sure that marginalized people are treated with respect. This seems to be the theme of most of the Torah, if not Deuteronomy and it needs to be emphasized again and again. We have such laws as allowing those in need to feed off gleanings in the field so they can eat. We are told that a creditor can not go into the domain of a debtor’s domain to collect the debt or take a possession as collateral. We are also told that workers are paid immediately so they can provide shelter and food. As these Israelites conquer and settle the Promised Land, by enacting these laws it will become a permanent part of their society and lifestyle. Thus it will become ingrained in there consciousness so they can lead a righteous and moral life and thus be an example of virtuousness to the rest of the world.

In fact, at the beginning of this portion we have the phrase צֶ֥דֶק צֶ֖דֶק תִּרְדֹּ֑ף “Justice, justice shall you pursue”. In Judaism, justice must be fair and balanced. There are very specific universal conditions for finding someone guilty, whether it’s a criminal or civil offense. First, the person must be warned or there must be proof that what they’re doing is against Torah. You see, in Judaism, there is no difference between Torah law and social law as there is in most countries today. Second, there must be two witnesses who see the person commit the offense. The penalty for false testimony? The perjurer will suffer the punishment that they conspired to have the party suffer. Finally, we have a repeat of lex talionis, the law of the tally or retribution. In some parts of the world, “eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life” is taken literally. Only for intentional murder does Israel seek equal retribution and for what we today call premeditated or murder in the first degree is the offender put to death; no exceptions. Otherwise, it is monetary compensation that may include additional penalties for punishment and humiliation, for example. The sages have determined that this is the fairest way to mete out justice. To do exactly to the guilty party as they have done to the victim may be in some cases almost impossible to do. How does one, for example, remove the eye of the guilty party who caused another to lose an eye without the possibility of peripheral damage? And then does the person meting out the punishment suffer a punishment for not doing it exactly correct? Justice, justice shall you pursue. Let us all live by these words.

Parashat Re’eh 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת רְאֵה 27 August 2022 / 30 Av 5782 https://youtu.be/qHI6FTs7s3M Parashat Re'eh is the 47th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. There are various circumstances when and Israelite would need financial help. For example, their crop harvest may be minimal, or they may not be able to find employment. The Torah tells us that we must (yes, must) provide assistance. One option is to give them a no-interest loan. These extra resources allows them to restore financial self-sufficiency. Hashem also mandates a time limit for them to pay back, which is the next Sh’mittah year. This is every seventh year and is known as the “year of release”. Even if that year is approaching soon, we are not to balk at the prospect of perhaps losing our loan because of the short time period. We are to be glad that we can provide charity and Hashem will reward us with increased prosperity. Consider the importance that Judaism places on helping people become prosperous. This ensures an orderly society in which people all contribute. It makes more better trust, higher standard of living and greater justice. Consider also that the word for “charity” in Hebrew is the same word for “justice”. By giving charity, we are creating justice. And we are doing the work of Hashem.

  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (August 20, 2022): "Parashat Ekev" 5782

https://youtu.be/lR3sVgWyfkE Parashat Eikev 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת עֵקֶב 20 August 2022 / 23 Av 5782 Parashat Eikev is the 46th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25 In Eikev (“As a Result”), Moses recounts events that happened in the desert, including the manna, the golden calf, and Aaron's death. Moses describes the blessings God will bestow upon the Israelites if they follow God’s law and the punishments they will encounter if they disobey. We now have the second paragraph of the Shema, Deuteronomy 11:13-20. While the text is very similar to the first paragraph of the Shema, what we call the V’Ahavtah, there is one difference. The commandments to not serve other gods, and to bind “these words” on your arms and heads are all in the plural. This is in contrast to the V’Ahavtah which is all in the singular. The repetition of these commands to make them individual and group actions is to emphasize that not only is this an individual responsibility, but a collective one as well. We all need to look out for one another and are therefore responsible for each other. This is not just in performing mitzvot but loving your fellow as yourself. Most of Judaism liturgy today can be prayed by individuals praying alone. Scattered throughout our prayer services are the sanctifications (Kiddushim) and repetition of the Amidah that requires a quorum of ten adults or minyan.
