Tisha B’Av is never observed on Shabbat. If the 9th of Av falls on a Saturday, the fast is postponed until the 10th of Av. • D'var Torah for Parashat Matot-Masei 5784  פָּרָשַׁת מַּטּוֹת־מַסְעֵי (3 August 2024 / 28 Tamuz 5784)

10-Minute Torah on YouTube Parashat Matot-Masei 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת מַּטּוֹת־מַסְעֵי 3 August 2024 / 28 Tamuz 5784 Parashat Matot-Masei is the 42nd and 43rd weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. But let’s draw our attention to the first section of our reading. Israel is getting ready to capture the land from the east, from what is now Jordan.  The tribes of Reuben and Gad, being herders, are attracted to the land being especially conducive to their livelihood.  They ask Moses to grant them land in that location, that is, where they are now.  Moses responds with concern that being busy with settling that land, they won’t be available to help conquer Israel proper.  They assure him that they will set up stall for their animals and cities for their children and wives and then join the campaign. We have discussed how Torah has no superfluous comments; every word, every verse is pertinent. Many sages have put their attention on how Reuben and Gad phrased their request: they mentioned stables for their animals before  setting up cities for their children and spouses.  Perhaps this caught Moses’ attention as well, hence getting their commitment to join the cause. Perhaps, also, is how two of the clans of Manasseh got involved.  They aren’t mentioned in requesting land there, but they are mentioned when Moses finally gives consent.  So perhaps Moses thought it might be a good idea to have part Manasseh there to sort of “keep an eye on them.”  Interesting topic for analysis.

God instructs Moses to prepare Joshua for leadership, and God describes sacrifices brought daily and on special occasions.  [1] Triennial year 2 1:  26:52-56   · 5 p’sukim   2:  26:57-62   · 6 p’sukim   3:  26:63-27:5   · 8 p’sukim   4:  27:6-14   · 9 p’sukim   5:  27:15-23   · 9 p’sukim   6:  28:1-10   · 10 p’sukim   7:  28:11-15   · 5 p’sukim  maf:  29:35-30:1   · 6 p’sukim   Haftarah*:  Jeremiah 1:1-2:3   · 22 p’sukim  *Pinchas occurring after 17 Tammuz   Hertz Chumash: pp. 710 – 713 Commentary and Divrei Torah  Sefaria    OU Torah    Jewish Theological Seminary   American Jewish University   Hertz Chumash: pp. 690 – 695 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 686 – 698) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 884 – 891 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 876 – 899) In this parashat we have the first recorded instance of women’s rights. Ancient societies, even some today, value and prefer sons over daughters.  Sons are physically and genetically stronger so they can do the heavy lifting of making a living by herding animals and farming in ancient societies. They are the ones who go to war to deter aggression by a conquering enemy. Women were relegated to household chores and raising children.  They are the weaker sex with maternal instincts. Judaism is almost alone in honoring women for the necessary morality and ethics needed to raise children with good character. Women being excused from positive, time-based mitzvoth has been mischaracterized as them being inferior, rather than allowing them the opportunity to be able to provide proper rearing. Our portion contains the story of a group of women, each one named individually, who approach Moses and Aaron, and Hashem, with a request.  Their father died without sons so how do we reconcile his inheritance?  Why shouldn’t it go to his daughters?  Hashem wholeheartedly agrees and we now have a precedent in ancient inheritance laws. Notice the flow of our parashat: Pinchas’ actions in standing up for Hashem and the commandments of the covenant earn him and his descendants the honor of the High Priesthood.  The daughters’ of Tzelofchad respectful request earn them the honor of a new commandment. A lesson in devotion to us all.

  • D'var Torah for Parashat Balak 5784 (20 July 2024 / 14 Tamuz 5784)

D'var Torah on YouTube Parashat Balak 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת בָּלָק 20 July 2024 / 14 Tamuz 5784 Parashat Balak is the 40th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion:  Numbers 22:2-25:9 Balak tells the story of the Moabite king Balak, who hires Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam’s donkey speaks along the way, and Balaam ends up blessing the Israelites. First of all, when the prophet Balaam accepts Balak’s request to curse the Israelites as a way for the Moabite warrior king to defeat them, Hashem approaches Balaam and “talks” to him.  It has been said by our sages that Hashem gave each of the seventy ancient nations a prophet lest humankind complain that Israel had an unfair, special advantage. Then according to the flow of the text, Balaam seems to actually talk to Hashem, in contract to Jacob, for example, who only communicated with G-d in visions while asleep. It would seem, then, that Balaam had a special relationship with Hashem.   Then there is the incident of Balaam’s donkey “seeing” the angel with the sword preventing their path and complaining to Balaam that she couldn’t go forward because of that.  Did Balaam’s loyal ass really speak? Or was this a vision during sleep since the two people accompanying Balaam are not mentioned as present during this?   Then the text of the Torah states that the angel was an “obstruction” in their path that made the donkey turn to the right.  In Hebrew, the word for “obstruction” is—drum roll, please—“ Satan ”. Since we are told that the angel blocking their path, this “obstruction”, this satan  had a sword in his hand, well, then, this must be the one and only Satan, Hashem’s prosecuting attorney. In later years in other ideologies, Satan takes on a whole, new persona and becomes evil incarnate, tempting humans to sin and get condemned to eternal damnation.  Perhaps for every seven souls he corrupts he gets a new set of steak knives.    In any case, let’s just stick with an angel who blocked their path to get their attention to tell Balaam that curses for Israel are out, blessings are in.  Ahhh, perhaps we can get Satan to repeat this in present day to countries that seek to curse Israel for defending herself! Oh, well…. Oh bien….

  • This week's D'var Torah for Parashat Chukat 5784 (13 July 2024 / 7 Tamuz 5784)

D'var Torah on YouTube Parashat Chukat is the 39th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion:  Numbers 19:1-22:1 Chukat (“Law Of”) opens by describing the process of burning the red heifer and using its ashes for purification. It also tells the stories of the deaths of Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ striking of a rock to bring forth water, a plague of venomous snakes, and battles against the Emorite kings Sihon and Og.  [1] Triennial year 2 1:  19:1-6  · 6 p’sukim   2:  19:7-9  · 3 p’sukim   3:  19:10-17  · 8 p’sukim   4:  19:18-22  · 5 p’sukim   5:  20:1-6  · 6 p’sukim   6:  20:7-13  · 7 p’sukim   7:  20:14-21  · 8 p’sukim   maf:  20:18-21  · 4 p’sukim   Haftarah:  Judges 11:1-33   · 33 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah  Sefaria    OU Torah    Jewish Theological Seminary    American Jewish University   Hertz Chumash: pp. 652 – 658 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 652 – 664) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 824 – 831 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 820 – 837) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp. 863 – 869 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 860 – 875)   While this parashat contains the ultimate disappointments of both Moses and Aaron not being allowed to enter to Promised Land, it is also contains the positive developments of Israel defeating the Emorite kings.   Our Triennial reading contains the chapter where Hashem tells Moses to talk to the rock to get water.  Now that Miriam the prophetess has died—by whose merit Israel found water every three days—it is now up to Moses and Aaron.  Moses loses control.  He has been dealing with Israelites to these last thirty-nine years who have complained and when Hashem told him to speak to the rock, he struck it, probably out of frustration.  It was that incident that condemned him to not enter the Promised Land.   Or was it?  It is hard to consider that just one incident doomed Moshe Rabbeinu, the greatest of all prophets.  After all, did Moses not plead to spare the Israelites after the incident of the spies, reciting the thirteen attributes?  Moses was the greatest of all, his humility is an example for us all.   Perhaps it was his response earlier in his life when he had left Egypt and alighted in the territory of Yitro and said he was an Egyptian rather than an Israelite.  Then again, he had been raised as an Egyptian all his life at that time and was really just coming to terms with his true heritage. So at that point, in his mind, he really was an Egyptian.   One of the attributes and qualities of Hashem is His divine justice.  So we would have to consider all of the facts.  Notwithstanding Moses’ greatness, perhaps he should have exerted himself more when Israel and the Erev Rav  rebelled. After all, Caleb and Joshua confronted the rebellious and cantankerous Israelites when they started to attack Moses and Aaron and that earned them the right to possess the Land.   Despite this, we nevertheless honor Moses as our greatest teacher.  Perhaps the lesson here is how he accepted G-d’s Judgment and thus his name lives on in the annuls of greatness forever. • This week's D'var Torah for Parashat Korach 5784 (6 July 2024 / 30 Sivan 5784) פָּרָשַׁת קוֹרַח

Consider that this is probably the first time in recorded history that political rivals “spun the truth”, that is manipulated the facts to present erroneous conclusions to sway people to their thinking and thus choose them as leaders. Rabbi Hertz tells us that the Midrash discusses how Korach in one example, asked Moses if a blue woolen garment needs that one thread of blue, the techellet, and when Moses confirmed that it did, Korach then tried to convince the people how absurd Moses’ laws were.  And he emphasized that they were Moses’ laws to discredit him, not Hashem’s. Nevertheless, divine justice prevailed and the rebels were not only discredited themselves but paid a heavy price. Yes, sometimes it takes a while, but it’s good for us to have that Truth, the full Truth, will ultimately prevail. Notice also in this parashat that towards the end of the chapter there is a discussion of gifts to the priests and ministers. This is almost a formula in Torah.  In various places in Torah, we have incidents where people stray from Hashem’s teachings. Rather than focus solely on the negatives, we then get instances of uplifting scenarios.  Probably the best example is the Tochacha, where Israel is told briefly the rewards that await them for committing to mitzvoth and then an extensive, increasing list of punishments when they don’t, which is followed by the hope that in the end, Hashem is waiting for us with open arms to welcome us back into proper observance and prosperity. So, every story seems to have a happy ending.

Therefore, the custom is to announce the exact time at which the new moon will appear (the molad). This is also why we stand during the ceremony, because the people used to stand before the Beit Din when it performed the mitzvah of Kiddush HaChodesh.
