Moses sent out spies, one representative from each tribe to scout out the land. While such action is a wise military maneuver, the Israelites once again doubted the word of Hashem who committed to overseeing their actions and bring them to success. The scouts were not up to the task as they brought back a report, that while true, exaggerated the dangers and cause immense distress to the people. Hashem told Moses he’d had enough and doomed them to wander in the wilderness for forty years until this weak nation could die off and bring forth a heartier generation that was up to the task of conquering the promised land with a renewed faith in G-d. Our parashah ends with a new, very important commandment. So that we are constantly reminded of Hashem’s mitzvot, we are to tie a special arrangement of knots on the four corners of our clothing. These tzitzit will remind that every time we look at them, we are not to follow our hearts or our eye, but rather only those commandments.

Torah Portion: Numbers 8:1-12:16 https://tikkun.io/#/r/4-8-1 Beha’alotekha (“When You Raise”) opens with God instructing Moses to inaugurate the Levites for service in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). It also recounts the stories of people who request a second chance to offer the Passover sacrifice, complaints of the Israelites and their punishments, and a disease that affects Miriam. It is having the courage and fortitude to always do what’s right no matter what the circumstances or the temptation. It’s continuing to have that strength of character even when the going gets so rough that it’s easy to dismiss those values. Israel was in the middle of the desert. They had received the Ten Commandments, seen the might of Hashem, drank water, eaten both manna and quail supplied by Hashem. They had seen the protection of the two pillars of cloud to protect them. And now, they start complaining. They are tired of just manna and want meat. They miss Egypt for the unending supply of free fish they had to eat. Likewise, Miriam and Aaron complain about Moses’ neglect of his wife. Consider that faith is believing in something just because. Yet Israel didn’t need faith. They had seen the miracles with their own eyes. We are, unfortunately, starting to see why our ancestors would be doomed to wander in the desert for thirty-nine years. It is starting to look like they lack the fortitude and integrity to continue to be loyal to Hashem even when times are tough. A lesson for the rest of us in times of trouble…. Y ahora, empiezan a quejarse.

- This week's 10-Minute Torah (June 12, 2022): "Parashat Naso"
https://youtu.be/ZNZPAeSc9ds Parashat Nasso 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת נָשׂא 11 June 2022 / 12 Sivan 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Nasso is the 35th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Numbers 4:21-7:89 Naso (“Take A Census”), the longest portion in the Torah, opens by detailing responsibilities of the Levites. It also describes laws of a woman suspected of adultery (sotah), the Nazirite, and the priestly blessing. The portion ends by listing the gifts that heads of tribes bring to the Mishkan (Tabernacle). [1] Triennial year 3 1: 7:1-11 · 11 p’sukim · 2: 7:12-23 · 12 p’sukim · 3: 7:24-35 · 12 p’sukim · 4: 7:36-47 · 12 p’sukim · 5: 7:48-59 · 12 p’sukim · 6: 7:60-71 · 12 p’sukim · 7: 7:72-89 · 18 p’sukim · maf: 7:87-89 · 3 p’sukim · Haftarah: Judges 13:2-25 · 24 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah : Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary Soncino Chumash: pp. 596 - 601 Triennial Year 3 (Full Kriyah pp. 586 - 601) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 764 - 773 Triennial Year 3 (Full Kriyah pp. 748 - 773) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp. 804 - 811 Triennial Year 3 (Full Kriyah pp. 791 - 811) Our Triennial portion focuses on the gifts of the tribes, represented by each prince, or head, offering gifts to the Mishkan. Each head of the tribe brought the gifts over a period of twelve days, one tribe per day. Each prince offered the same exact number of animals and weight of gold and silver. This chapter is also the readings that are done over the eight days of Hanukkah. The commentary discusses how even though each tribe offered the same gifts, that does not detract from the quality of the offerings. None of the tribes wanted to offer more or less that any of the others. In this way, each of the tribes were equal before Hashem. Similarly, when each of us offers prayers to Hashem, each of us is special to our God. While each of us may be praying the same prayers of our service, we are all, each of us, different. Yet each of us is also special in our own way to our Creator.
- This year's 10-Minute Torah (June 6 & 7, 2022): "Parashat Shavuot 5782
Shavuot 2022 / שָׁבוּעוֹת 5782 Festival of Weeks ⛰️🌸 Shavuot I / שָׁבוּעוֹת א׳ Sunday, 5 June 2022 / 6 Sivan 5782 Torah Portion: Exodus 19:1-20:23; Numbers 28:26-31 1: Exodus 19:1-6 · 6 p’sukim · 2: Exodus 19:7-13 · 7 p’sukim · 3: Exodus 19:14-19 · 6 p’sukim · 4: Exodus 19:20-20:14 · 20 p’sukim · 5: Exodus 20:15-23 · 9 p’sukim · maf: Numbers 28:26-31 · 6 p’sukim · Haftarah: Ezekiel 1:1-28, 3:12 · 29 p’sukim Shavuot commemorates the giving of what has been called the Ten Commandments, or more accurately, the Decalogue. The latter phrase is of Greek origin and describes ten utterances or words. Of course there are many more commandments that Hashem promulgated, 613. What makes these so special? Consider that they are given first because they form the basis of all the others. In Judaism we recognize that these mitzvot, which make up how our society functions, is mandated by God. That make Torah, our law, absolute. There is no compromising our principles. We have to be steadfast in how we relate to each other. This is a direct extension from how we relate to Hashem. Notice that there are commandments to how we treat God and how we treat each other. It is important that we remember that there is no difference between them. Torah, our law is Divine. Shavuot reminds us of that. Shavuot II / שָׁבוּעוֹת ב׳ Monday, 6 June 2022 / 7 Sivan 5782 Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 15:19-16:17; Numbers 28:26-31 1: Deuteronomy 15:19-23 · 5 p’sukim · 2: Deuteronomy 16:1-3 · 3 p’sukim · 3: Deuteronomy 16:4-8 · 5 p’sukim · 4: Deuteronomy 16:9-12 · 4 p’sukim · 5: Deuteronomy 16:13-17 · 5 p’sukim · maf: Numbers 28:26-31 · 6 p’sukim · Haftarah: Habakkuk 3:1-19 · 19 p’sukim Our Torah reading for the second day of Shavuot is the same reading for the eighth day of Pesach. We have another reminder of the three pilgrimage festivals. This reading focuses on the offerings for each of those festivals. As such, we must remember that our success and prosperity in life is a result of following Hashem’s commandments and working hard.

- This week's 10-Minute Torah (June 4, 2022): "Parashat Bamidbar" 5782
https://youtu.be/TiBapT-AzJU Parashat Bamidbar 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת בְּמִדְבַּר 4 June 2022 / 5 Sivan 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Bamidbar is the 34th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Numbers 1:1-4:20 https://tikkun.io/#/r/4-1-1 Bamidbar (“In The Desert”) is the first Torah portion in the Book of Numbers. It describes God's command to take a census and details the camping formation of the Israelites in the desert. It also begins to enumerate the responsibilities of the Levites when transporting the Mishkan (Tabernacle). [1] Triennial year 3 1: 3:14-20 · 7 p’sukim · 2: 3:21-26 · 6 p’sukim · 3: 3:27-39 · 13 p’sukim · 4: 3:40-43 · 4 p’sukim · 5: 3:44-51 · 8 p’sukim · 6: 4:1-10 · 10 p’sukim · 7: 4:11-20 · 10 p’sukim · maf: 4:17-20 · 4 p’sukim · Haftarah: Hosea 2:1-22 · 22 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah : Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary Our Triennial portion (third) starts discussing the transporting duties of the first of the three Levite clans after describing their positions around the Tabernacle. The Kohathites had the profound responsibility of transporting the holiest of the Tabernacle objects, the sacred utensils. This was not a mundane task. These objects had to be covered with blue cloths before placing them to be transported. What made this task so awesome was that looking at the actual object may mean death at the hands of Heaven. It was stated in the Torah that if someone besides the High Priest were to glance at these objects, they would die. Some sages don’t interpret this warning literally. Some felt that gazing at them might them seem more ordinary than holy and thus they might lose respect for what they represented. Others felt that gazing at them might put some in a spiritual trance; this would create a false holiness and suggest worshipping that object by staring at it. In any case, it was important that these ministers gave these objects their appropriate respect. This might also be why this clan is mentioned first.

The Temple required a lot of upkeep, such as replacing the gold and silver as the paraphernalia were used and animals and grains for the daily offerings. It also required wood for burning. Israelites could pledge based on their own worth as human beings. For example, a male from ages twenty through fifty would be worth fifty shekels of silver while a woman in the same age bracket would be worth thirty. Those values would be their pledges. Yes, males and females are valued differently. Why? The best explanation is because of productivity. While women’s role was seen as raising and instilling social values into their children, and maintaining the household, men did the more physical labor of farming and herding animals. Consider that the work that men did was more pertinent to physical surviving, producing food and clothing and also building and maintaining structures. This is not a value judgment whatsoever; rather it is a judgment based on value.
