- This week's 10-Minute Torah (May 21, 2022): "Parashat Behar" 5782
https://youtu.be/TNvjcZWh2Hc Parashat Behar 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת בְּהַר 21 May 2022 / 20 Iyyar 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Behar is the 32nd weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 25:1-26:2 https://tikkun.io/#/r/3-25-1 Behar (“On The Mountain”) details the laws of the sabbatical year (Shemita), when working the land is prohibited and debts are forgiven. It also sets out laws of indentured servitude and of the Jubilee year (Yovel), when property reverts to its original ownership. Triennial year 3 1: 25:29-34 · 6 p’sukim · 2: 25:35-38 · 4 p’sukim · 3: 25:39-43 · 5 p’sukim · 4: 25:44-46 · 3 p’sukim · 5: 25:47-50 · 4 p’sukim · 6: 25:51-54 · 4 p’sukim · 7: 25:55-26:2 · 3 p’sukim · maf: 25:55-26:2 · 3 p’sukim · Haftarah: Jeremiah 32:6-27 · 22 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary Probably one of the most important concepts in Judaism is respect. After the presentation of the Ten Commandments, we are told how to treat a slave. Slaves are the most vulnerable people in society and in Judaism they are treated as people and not overworked or abused. Similarly, we extend this level of respect to a person’s livelihood and land. For whatever reason, some people do not succeed in business like others. Some have situations come up which prevents them from barely providing a sustainable living from their farming or husbandry ventures. These people may be forced to sell their land or go into debt to support themselves. Some even have to sell themselves to others’ servitude to survive. This, however, does not become a permanent situation. As we see every year on Yom Kippur, everyone deserves opportunities to do better. As such, in the fiftieth year when the ram’s horn is sounded at the end of Yom Kippur, the Jubilee (yoval means ram’s horn) returns land to it’s ancestral, rightful, owners. Not only does this make sure that families keep their inheritance from Hashem, but it also prevents a class of extremely wealthy people who buy up this land from becoming too powerful. Should the worst possible scenario happen, that an Israelite has to sell themselves to an alien, their relatives and/or friends need to exhaust any means possible to secure their freedom. This has become the template of Jewish history. We as Jews always have to look out for each other and in dire times, do what we can to save our fellow Jews. It is one of the most important commandments in the Torah.
- This week's 10-Minute Torah (May 14, 2022): "Parashat Emor" 5782
https://youtu.be/-NCTMmlaix4 Parashat Emor 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת אֱמוֹר 14 May 2022 / 13 Iyyar 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Emor is the 31st weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 21:1-24:23 Emor (“Say”) opens with laws regulating priestly behavior, working in the Mishkan (Tabernacle), and consuming sacrifices and priestly food. It describes the biblical holidays of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, and ends with a story about a blasphemer and his punishment. Triennial year 3 1: 23:23-25 · 3 p’sukim · 2: 23:26-32 · 7 p’sukim · 3: 23:33-44 · 12 p’sukim · 4: 24:1-4 · 4 p’sukim · 5: 24:5-9 · 5 p’sukim · 6: 24:10-12 · 3 p’sukim · 7: 24:13-23 · 11 p’sukim · maf: 24:21-23 · 3 p’sukim · Haftarah: Ezekiel 44:15-31 · 17 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary In our Triennial portion, we once again have a recounting of the yearly cycle of our holidays and festivals. Isn’t it interesting that this is presented right after discussed the sanctity of the priesthood and spiritual contamination! These yearly events are presented multiple times throughout Torah, but specifically here in this context. In Torah, nothing is haphazard; the flow is for specific reasons and purposes. Consider that the juxtaposition is that the sacred times are themselves a situation of purity. Also, the holidays and festivals are there to remind us that we are a nation of priests, and these events help us maintain that purity in our action and deed. Consider also that this parashat comes in the midst of a multitude of mitzvot that command us to be honest and charitable with our fellow, even to the point of loving our fellow as ourselves. What better way to facilitate than to share these occasions?

During non-leap years, these two are read together since the themes are similar and connected. Some of the parashat continues while much of it introduces us to new mitzvot, most of it relating to the Ten Commandments. While chapter 18 of Leviticus in the portion of Aharei Mot discusses forbidden relationships, Kedoshim discusses consequences, for example. We are also told and reminded of laws that are critical for society to function optimally. We are commanded to respect our parents. Our parents are crucial for our learning morality and functioning properly in society. We are given mitzvot how to behave in business. We are not to cheat others and withhold important information for making the business deal. All this comes to a head as we are told to love our fellow as ourselves. But once again, we are admonished not to gossip. Don’t join with others in the commission of false reporting. Don’t gossip. Like murder, this is an action that, for the most part, can’t be undone. When someone’s life is gone, it’s gone. When someone’s reputation is tarnished, it is near impossible to redeem their esteem; there will always be that doubt. Perhaps talebearing is subtle and less evident and obvious why Torah addresses it so often; murder is pretty obvious. In fact, during Yom Kippur, many of our repentances address this act more so than other acts. Think about it….

- This week's 10-Minute Torah (April 30, 2022): "Parashat Acharei Mot" 5782
https://youtu.be/TjeZxVp7bsU Parashat Achrei Mot 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת אַחֲרֵי מוֹת 30 April 2022 / 29 Nisan 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Achrei Mot is the 29th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 16:1-18:30 https://tikkun.io/#/r/3-16-1 Achrei Mot (“After The Death”) opens by describing the ritual service of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It then details the prohibitions of offering sacrifices outside of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and of eating animal blood, and ends with a list of forbidden sexual relations. Triennial year 3 1: 17:1-7 · 7 p’sukim · 2: 17:8-12 · 5 p’sukim · 3: 17:13-16 · 4 p’sukim · 4: 18:1-5 · 5 p’sukim · 5: 18:6-21 · 16 p’sukim · 6: 18:22-25 · 4 p’sukim · 7: 18:26-30 · 5 p’sukim · maf: 18:26-30 · 5 p’sukim · Haftarah for Ashkenazim*: I Samuel 20:18-42 · 25 p’sukim *Shabbat Machar Chodesh Parashat Aharei Mot (or just Aharei in some Humashim) contains two portions that are read on Yom Kippur. During the morning Torah reading, we read Leviticus 16:1-34 which discusses the procedure by which the Cohen Gadol, High Priest, make expiation or repentance for the congregation of Israel. This is the obvious choice. The afternoon reading is from the same portion and is Leviticus Chapter 18, which discusses forbidden relationships. This choice may not seem as obvious. How is the chapter that admonishes Israel from engaging in relationships with specific relatives related to our most solemn Holy Day in which we seek contrition for our sins? First of all, let’s consider the times in which this was first presented. Paganism and idolatry was rampant and the ancient peoples engaged in all sorts of deviant sexual practices, among other things. They gave in to their temptations and in many cases reveled in it. Yom Kippur addresses this by having us practice restraint. The most evident example is abstaining from food and drink for twenty-six hours. But also, Hashem has given us a path to direct our urges to socially healthy means. This also reminds us that the family is the most basic unit of society. Without a positive family to instill proper morals and ethics, society falls down. We need to get along with each other and practice trust and respect so society can fulfill itself to the fullest. In that way, each of us has a better opportunity to fulfill ourselves and create a better world.

Pharaoh again, unfortunately for the last time, hardens his heart after Moses leads the Israelites to freedom. It is interesting to note that Hashem had Moses lead them away from Egypt so that they would not have any regrets about leaving their captivity. At the same time, they are now with their backs against the Sea of Reeds as Pharaoh comes charging after them with his special forces chariots. But Hashem had a plan. He would be “glorified”, that is honored by showing the Egyptians, one last important time, that Hashem is the one true G-d. As the Israelites pass through in safety, the best of the Egyptian army is confounded in their attempt to catch them, and drown, both man and horse, in the sea as it closes up on them. Only Pharaoh survives, a broken man. We learn that those who put ego above humanity, their own glory above consideration of their fellow humans, are doomed. Pharaoh refuses to relent and treat people with respect. And for that, he paid with his kingdom.

Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG’vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה; "Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day"), known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day, is observed as Israel’s day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews and five million others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories, and for the Jewish resistance in that period. In Israel, it is a national memorial day and public holiday. It was inaugurated on 1953, anchored by a law signed by the Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion and the President of Israel Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. It is held on the 27th of Nisan (April/May), unless the 27th would be adjacent to Shabbat, in which case the date is shifted by a day. - This week's 10-Minute Torah (April 23): "Pesach 8/Shabbat" 5782
https://youtu.be/TrRTwyIjdPQ Pesach VIII (on Shabbat) / פֶּסַח ח׳ Saturday, 23 April 2022 / 22 Nisan 5782 Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 14:22-16:17; Numbers 28:19-25 1: Deuteronomy 14:22-29 · 8 p’sukim · 2: Deuteronomy 15:1-18 · 18 p’sukim · 3: Deuteronomy 15:19-23 · 5 p’sukim · 4: Deuteronomy 16:1-3 · 3 p’sukim · 5: Deuteronomy 16:4-8 · 5 p’sukim · 6: Deuteronomy 16:9-12 · 4 p’sukim · 7: Deuteronomy 16:13-17 · 5 p’sukim · maf: Numbers 28:19-25 · 7 p’sukim · Haftarah: Isaiah 10:32-12:6 · 25 p’sukim The portion for the last day of Passover also occurs on Shabbat. The last five aliyot are the same for when Pesach 8 is not on Shabbat and discusses the Sh’mittah Year (seventh year) in which slaves go free and debts are forgiven. It also discusses the three pilgrimage festivals (Passover, Shavuot and Succot/Shemini Atzeret). The first two aliyot for Passover 8/Shabbat discusses the tithes that go to the poor and the Levites, who have no possession of land. We are to take our tithes and go to “a place that I (Hashem) will designate”. This would become he Temple in Jerusalem. When it is a long journey, we can sell our cattle and grain for coins. We can then take that money and once there spend it on anything our heart desires, food or drink. Once again, the theme is first born. We, the first born, were spared when the Destroyer wreaked havoc on the Egyptians, and this is yet another way to remember and respect that. We are also commanded to be generous when releasing a Hebrew slave. This theme is connected to the Israelites leaving Egypt with gift from the Egyptians for having served as slaves for over one hundred years.

Now that the Israelites have observed the first Passover, in a sense, the first Seder (Ex 12: 1 – 20), events climax. Our special portion describes how now Israel needs to prepare for the Destroyer (G-d’s agent) to take retribution on Egypt by killing the first born. They are now to take hyssop and dab blood on the lintels of their doorposts to escape that action. And this, of course, is the precursor of the Shema telling us to bind it as a sign on our doorposts for generations to come. Pesach 2 2022 / פֶּסַח 5782 Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread 🫓🍷 Pesach for Hebrew Year 5782 begins in the Diaspora at sundown on Friday, 15 April 2022 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 23 April 2022. This is very fitting since the first born Israel were spared from the Destroyer. The portion then goes on to enumerate the various holidays and festivals that populate the Jewish year. It, of course, starts with Passover with is described as beginning the year with the month of Abib which means “spring”. The month we now call Nissan is actually the secular new year, contrasted with Rosh Hashanah, which is the spiritual new year and when the Hebrew year advances. Rosh Hashanah is called Yom T’ruah the day of the sounding of the shofar. Each of the holidays are then discussed.
