Pesach 1 2022 / פֶּסַח 5782

Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread 🫓🍷

Pesach for Hebrew Year 5782 begins in the Diaspora at sundown on Friday, 15 April 2022 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 23 April 2022.

Passover (Hebrew: פֶּסַח Pesach) commemorates the story of the Exodus, in which the ancient Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar, which is in spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and is celebrated for seven or eight days. It is one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays.

This first day of Passover, which this year (5782) coincides with Shabbat, continues from the reading of Shabbat Hachodesh. Now that the Israelites have observed the first Passover, in a sense, the first Seder (Ex 12: 1 – 20), events climax. Our special portion describes how now Israel needs to prepare for the Destroyer (G-d’s agent) to take retribution on Egypt by killing the first born. They are now to take hyssop and dab blood on the lintels of their doorposts to escape that action.

And this, of course, is the precursor of the Shema telling us to bind it as a sign on our doorposts for generations to come.

The parashat for the second day of Passover starts off with the command to consecrate the first-born of cattle and the first fruits. This is very fitting since the first born Israel were spared from the Destroyer.

The portion then goes on to enumerate the various holidays and festivals that populate the Jewish year. It, of course, starts with Passover with is described as beginning the year with the month of Abib which means “spring”. The month we now call Nissan is actually the secular new year, contrasted with Rosh Hashanah, which is the spiritual new year and when the Hebrew year advances. Rosh Hashanah is called Yom T’ruah the day of the sounding of the shofar. Each of the holidays are then discussed.
