- This week's D'var Torah: פָּרָשַׁת אֱמוֹר Parashat Emor 5784 18 May 2024 / 10 Iyyar 5784
10-Minute Torah on YouTube Parashat Emor is the 31st weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 21:1-24:23 Emor (“Say”) opens with laws regulating priestly behavior, working in the Mishkan (Tabernacle), and consuming sacrifices and priestly food. It describes the biblical holidays of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, and ends with a story about a blasphemer and his punishment. [1] Triennial year 2 1: 22:17-20 · 4 p’sukim 2: 22:21-25 · 5 p’sukim 3: 22:26-33 · 8 p’sukim 4: 23:1-3 · 3 p’sukim 5: 23:4-8 · 5 p’sukim 6: 23:9-14 · 6 p’sukim 7: 23:15-22 · 8 p’sukim maf: 24:21-23 · 3 p’sukim Haftarah: Ezekiel 44:15-31 · 17 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary American Jewish University Hertz Chumash: pp. 513– 528 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 517 – 528) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 678 – 695 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 672 – 695) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp. 722 – 733 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 717 – 733) Once again we have an accounting of the various holidays throughout the course of the year. This is also one of the many places in the Torah in which these special occasions, “places in time to meet”, are discussed. So why here? One of the ways we analyze Torah is by context and flow. We look at the passages before and after and look at how they relate to each other. Notice that our portion opens discussing various regulations and qualifications of the priests and high priests. Their behavior and appearance needs to be exemplary. Perhaps these are the conditions and requirements set forth prior to officiating and leading the Congregation of Israel into these times when we connect directly with Hashem through our special times. Contrasted to this is an incident in which someone who was identified as not fully an Israelite defamed and cursed the holy name. The point is that respect for the One, True G-d is critical within our midst and there are no exceptions. We certainly want to welcome all, but they must respect our processes.

- This week's 10-Minute Torah: פָּרָשַׁת קְדשִׁים Parashat Kedoshim 5784 (11 May 2024 / 3 Iyyar 5784)
Parashat Kedoshim 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת קְדשִׁים 11 May 2024 / 3 Iyyar 5784 D’var Torah on YouTube Parashat Kedoshim is the 30th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 19:1-20:27 Kedoshim (“Holy”) opens by instructing the Israelites to be holy. It details dozens of laws regulating all aspects of life, including observing Shabbat, loving one’s neighbor, and leaving portions of a field for the poor. First of all, it is right in the middle of the Torah. It is a fairly short parashat, but each verse is rich with information. It is similar to the parashat MIshpatim (the parashat right after the Ten Commandments) in that it, too, lists an extensive array of commandments. In our Humash, Rabbi Hertz gives extensive commentary that makes for a lengthy reading. Why? Consider that this parashat can be summarized by the phrase, “social justice”. A common theme is treating people of minimal means fairly: helping them out with interest-free loans and allowing them access to the gleanings (produce left behind) of your field, as well as paying them immediately for any work they do so they can buy food and shelter. Akin to that is helping the widow and orphan who both may be needy, and, of course, being kind to the stranger. We also want to avoid immoral practices, both social and spiritual. We do not bear grudges or take vengeance for wrongs. We do not favor the poor in judgment against the wealthy since they have greater need for the success of the trial. We do not lie, cheat, steal or talebear. We do not put any credence or worship ghosts, spirits or demons, as those practices will take us away from Hashem and Torah. I would invite you all to study this parashat. It’s very worthy and always timely.

In Israel, it is a national memorial day and public holiday. It was inaugurated on 1953, anchored by a law signed by the Prime Minister of Israel David Ben-Gurion and the President of Israel Yitzhak Ben-Zvi. - This week's 10-Minute Parashat Achrei Mot 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת אַחֲרֵי מוֹת
4 May 2024 / 26 Nisan 5784 D’var Torah on YouTube Parashat Achrei Mot is the 29th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 16:1-18:30 Achrei Mot (“After The Death”) opens by describing the ritual service of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Acherei Mot continues after the death of Aaron’s two oldest sons and describes the process of repentance that has become Yom Kippur. Many see the consequence of Nadab and Abihu neglecting Hashem’s teaching with the need for a formal process for redemption. Of course, the process described for a time when a Temple was standing to today’s Judaism without a central Temple is very different. We also have chapter 18 that describes forbidden relationships. As always, consider the context and the concept that Israel is to lead the way of the world into purity. These relationships abounded in pagan societies that worshipped the temptation and lust that leads to sin. Our mission is to establish guidelines for a moral and respectful society in which everyone can thrive and feel the shame that leads to dysfunction.

Kabbalah Thought for this week "Kabbalists have revealed that the nation of Amalek is a code term that refers to the doubts and undertainties that dwell within the consciousness of humankind. Specifically, these doubts concern the following: our recogition of the reality of The Creator; our trust in the spirirutal laws of our universe; our willingness to embark on and remain on the correct spiritual path. Whenever we begin to approach these universsal truths and come nearer to the Light, doubts automatically set in. Consciously waging war against uncertainty helps to hasten the arrival of our personal Messiah, as well as the global redemption. Moreover, triumping over our doubt helps to ignite the Light of mercy, which sweetens the Judgments due to us as a result of previous iniquities in this life or past incarnation. Hence, the strength to defeat skepticism is summoned forth herein and Light of mercy shines brighter in our lives, helping to soften decrees of judgement that might be due us." Kabbalah Thought for this week "To achieve a higher level of spirituality and existence, we sometimes need to "borrow" Light from the Creator in order to use it to awaken and arouse even grater Light in our lives and in this world. This is similar to a businessman borrowing money from a bak for the prupose of building a successful business. In other, you need money in order to make money." A very poignant prayer that gives us comfort: Announcements -Office Hours -This week’s 10-Minute -Events -Candle Lighting Times for Shabbat (Ontario, CA) -Shabbat Services -School *For your information, I have included below my schedule, including office hours for the next two weeks and specific classes in which I am involved. **For your convenience and information, Zoom links will be provided in separate emails for security purposes. ***I continue to update our Mi Sheberach מי שברך list for those in need of healing. - D'varTorah for Parashat Metzora 5784 (20 April 2024) פָּרָשַׁת מְּצֹרָע
Parashat Metzora 5784 / פָּרָשַׁת מְּצֹרָע 20 April 2024 / 12 Nisan 5784 D'var Torah on YouTube Parashat Metzora is the 28th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 14:1-15:33 Metzora opens by describing the purification process and accompanying sacrifices for one infected with tzaraat, a discoloration condition on the skin. It then describes the process of treating a house infected with tzaraat and the ritual impurity generated by certain bodily discharges. [1] Triennial year 2 1: 14:1-5 · 5 p’sukim 2: 14:6-9 · 4 p’sukim 3: 14:10-12 · 3 p’sukim 4: 14:13-15 · 3 p’sukim 5: 14:16-20 · 5 p’sukim 6: 14:21-25 · 5 p’sukim 7: 14:26-32 · 7 p’sukim maf: 14:30-32 · 3 p’sukim Haftarah*: Malachi 3:4-24 · 21 p’sukim *Shabbat HaGadol Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary American Jewish University Hertz Chumash: pp. 470 – 473 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 470 – 477) Artscroll Chumash: pp. 620 – 625 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 620 – 635) Etz Chaim Chumash: pp. 660 – 663 Triennial Year 2 (Full Kriyah pp. 660– 670) Shabbat HaGadol 2024 / שַׁבָּת הַגָּדוֹל 5784 Shabbat before Pesach (The Great Shabbat) 🕍 Shabbat HaGadol for Hebrew Year 5784 begins at sundown on Friday, 19 April 2024 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 20 April 2024. This corresponds to Parashat Metzora. Shabbat HaGadol (“Great Shabbat” שבת הגדול) is the Shabbat immediately before Passover. There is a special Haftarah reading on this Shabbat of the book of Malachi. Traditionally a lengthy and expansive sermon is given to the general community in the afternoon. In our last parashat, we learned of all the skin impurities that can infect people. In this parashat, we have the spiritual processes that we do after these maladies are resolved. We also learn how to deal with marks that appear on the walls of our houses and as well as unusual discharges. Usually in non-leap years these two parashats are read together on the same Shabbat. That the Torah devotes two parachot to dealing with maladies that occur on the skin maladies and impure discharges gives us insight about cleanliness and purity. The same question arises: Is this about health or about spiritual cleanliness? Consider that it deals with both. When we live in a clean environment, we feel good. It also helps us to respect our bodies and be considerate of others around us. Either way, it addresses how to keep ourselves pure in society as we interact with others. [1] Trienal año 2 1: 14:1-5 · 5 pesukim 2: 14:6-9 · 4 pesukim 3: 14:10-12 · 3 pesukim 4: 14:13-15 · 3 pesukim 5: 14:16-20 · 5 pesukim 6: 14:21-25 · 5 pesukim 7: 14:26-32 · 7 pesukim maf: 14:30-32 · 3 pesukim Haftará*: Malaquías 3:4-24 · 21 pesukim *Shabbat HaGadol Shabat HaGadol 2024 / שַׁבָּת הַגָּדוֹל 5784 Shabat antes de Pesaj (El Gran Shabat) 🕍 Shabat HaGadol para el año hebreo 5784 comienza al atardecer del viernes 19 de abril de 2024 y termina al anochecer del sábado 20 de abril de 2024.

The Etz Haim humash states that in the previous portion we discussed the holiness of what goes into the body; now we discuss what comes out. The parashat starts out discussing the procedure for a woman who gives birth to purify herself. Sometimes, this gets misunderstood. This is not a denigration or a negative. Rather, it is a way to sanctify and preserve the health of both the mother and the child. After all, the first commandment in the Torah is to be fruitful and multiply. These laws discuss the process. We also are introduced to the laws of dealing with various impurities that appear on the skin There is discussion on the purpose of these laws. Some say that in this primitive society it was a way of preserving health. Others contend that they are really about holiness, the same way eating certain animals was about holiness and not life. The Artscroll Humash contends that the reason for the various skin ailments were as a direct result of Lashon Harah, and it was a divine way of keeping talebearers out of society. This would minimize the damage that evil speech causes. Great points for discussion.

Kabbalah Thought for this week "To achieve a higher level of spirituality and existence, we sometimes need to "borrow" Light from The Creator in order to use it to awaken and arouse even greater Light in our lives and in this world. This is similar to a businessman borrowing money from a bank for the purpose of building a successful business. In other words, you need money to make money." Exodus 12:1-20 and the laws of Passover.
