Parashat Lech-Lecha is the 3rd weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.

Torah Portion: Genesis 12:1-17:27

Lech Lecha (“Go Forth”) recounts Abraham’s (here known as Abram) first encounter with God, his journey to Canaan, the birth of his son Ishmael, the covenant between him, his descendants, and God, and God’s commandment to circumcise the males of his household. [1]

Having been introduced to our Patriarch, Abram, Torah now focuses on him and his wife Sarai, pioneers of this new idea of worshipping G-d.  The world is going to be introduced as well to a new system of Divine ethics and morality that will enable us to build societies in which people can work together to make life better for everyone.  Quite a new concept to a world where the strongest make the rules and take what they want.

So Hashem appears to Abram and tells him to leave his home and just go.  He will be directed on the way to places and situations that He wants him to experience.  This is not just a physical journey, but also a spiritual one.  Abram will become “Abraham”, a father of many nations, and Sarai, his wife, will become Sarah.  The two of them are to build a system of Hashem’s teachings that no one has known before. This is both the physical and spiritual path.

This all takes a monumental leap of faith.  Or was it for Abraham?  Abraham has already acknowledged a Divine creation and maintenance of the Universe.  Abraham has already seen that idols of wood and stone, and heavenly bodies do not govern our lives; there is a more powerful force at work.

This is how G-d knew that Abraham and Sarah were to two people fit for the job.  They would embrace this new way of living and bring others into the fold. How fortunate are we, four thousand years later, to be the descendants and guardians to carry on this work.

Tras conocer a nuestro Patriarca, Abram, la Torá se centra ahora en él y su esposa Sarai, pioneros de esta nueva idea de adorar a Dios. El mundo también conocerá un nuevo sistema de ética y moralidad divina que nos permitirá construir sociedades en las que las personas puedan trabajar juntas para mejorar la vida de todos. Un concepto completamente nuevo en un mundo donde los más fuertes imponen las reglas y toman lo que quieren.

Entonces, Hashem se le aparece a Abram y le dice que abandone su hogar y se vaya. Será guiado a lugares y situaciones que Él quiere que experimente. Este no es solo un viaje físico, sino también espiritual. Abram se convertirá en "Abraham", padre de muchas naciones, y Sarai, su esposa, se convertirá en Sara. Ambos construirán un sistema de enseñanzas de Hashem que nadie ha conocido antes. Esto es a la vez... Camino físico y espiritual.

Todo esto requiere un gran acto de fe. ¿O lo fue para Abraham? Abraham ya reconoció la creación y el mantenimiento divinos del universo. Abraham ya vio que los ídolos de madera y piedra, y los cuerpos celestes, no gobiernan nuestras vidas; hay una fuerza más poderosa en acción.

Así fue como Dios supo que Abraham y Sara eran dos personas idóneas para la tarea. Abrazarían esta nueva forma de vida y traerían a otros a su redil. Qué afortunados somos, cuatro mil años después, de ser los descendientes y guardianes que continúan esta obra.
