Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 33:1-34:12

V’Zot HaBerachah is the final portion in the annual cycle of Torah reading. In it, Moses blesses each of the tribes, excluding the tribe of Simeon. He then ascends Mount Nebo, sees the Land of Israel, and dies at the age of 120. The Israelites mourn, and the portion ends highlighting Moses’ unparalleled greatness. [1]

“And these are the blessings”.... What a beautiful way to end the Torah, the Five Books of Moshe Rabbeinu.  In today’s toxic environment, though, one may wonder where those blessings are.  In fact, considering the ten tribes that reverted to idolatry and were conquered and then dispersed into oblivion, again, how effective were those blessings?

We know that G-d is both merciful and disciplinarian.  Hashem rewards are observant conduct and give consequences for our misconduct, all the while waiting with Divine patience for our “t’shuva”, return.  And return, we have.

After two thousand years, after years of intense observance, we have our land back and at this point are on the verge of a lasting peace.  It is therefore wonderful that we read our blessings at the end of the Torah and then start anew during a time when we may be facing a new age of peace in our ancestral region.

With the help of our new DNA technology/biology, perhaps we will also fulfill the prophecy of the return of our brothers and sisters of the lost ten tribes and welcome them home.  Yes, we’ve been through some hard times and the losses were horrible, but perhaps with this new age their sacrifices and losses will not have been in vain.

Parashat Vezot Haberajá: Deuteronomio 33:1-34:12

“Y estas son las bendiciones”... Qué hermosa manera de terminar la Torá, los Cinco Libros de Moshe Rabbeinu. Sin embargo, en el ambiente tóxico actual, uno podría preguntarse dónde están esas bendiciones. De hecho, considerando las diez tribus que volvieron a la idolatría, fueron conquistadas y luego dispersadas en el olvido, nuevamente, ¿cuán efectivas fueron esas bendiciones?

Sabemos que Dios es misericordioso y disciplinario. Hashem recompensa la conducta observante y da consecuencias por nuestra mala conducta, mientras esperamos con paciencia Divina nuestra “teshuvá”, nuestro regreso. Y lo hemos logrado.

Después de dos mil años, tras años de intensa observancia, hemos recuperado nuestra tierra y en este punto estamos al borde de una paz duradera. Por lo tanto, es maravilloso que leamos nuestras bendiciones al final de la Torá y luego comencemos. de nuevo, en un momento en que podríamos estar ante una nueva era de paz en nuestra región ancestral.

Con la ayuda de nuestra nueva tecnología/biología del ADN, quizás también cumplamos la profecía del regreso de nuestros hermanos y hermanas de las diez tribus perdidas y les demos la bienvenida a casa. Sí, hemos pasado por momentos difíciles y las pérdidas fueron terribles, pero quizás con esta nueva era sus sacrificios y pérdidas no hayan sido en vano.
