This portion is the story of the Akeidah, the binding of Isaac. Abraham is told by Hashem to bring Isaac and offer him to Hashem. While at first Isaac doesn’t know what’s happening, he then willingly submits. Before Abraham is able to strike Isaac with his knife, an angel stays his hand. They then see a ram stuck in the thicket and sacrifice the ram instead. This demonstrates that Hashem does not want human sacrifices and sets the stage for using the shofar, the ram’s horn, in our religion, which honors the ram.

This portion ends describing the lineage of Rebecca, who will become Isaac’s wife.
