  • This year's 10-Minute Torah (June 6 & 7, 2022): "Parashat Shavuot 5782

Shavuot 2022 / שָׁבוּעוֹת 5782 Festival of Weeks ⛰️🌸 Shavuot I / שָׁבוּעוֹת א׳ Sunday, 5 June 2022 / 6 Sivan 5782 Torah Portion: Exodus 19:1-20:23; Numbers 28:26-31 1: Exodus 19:1-6 · 6 p’sukim · 2: Exodus 19:7-13 · 7 p’sukim · 3: Exodus 19:14-19 · 6 p’sukim · 4: Exodus 19:20-20:14 · 20 p’sukim · 5: Exodus 20:15-23 · 9 p’sukim · maf: Numbers 28:26-31 · 6 p’sukim · Haftarah: Ezekiel 1:1-28, 3:12 · 29 p’sukim Shavuot commemorates the giving of what has been called the Ten Commandments, or more accurately, the Decalogue. The latter phrase is of Greek origin and describes ten utterances or words. Of course there are many more commandments that Hashem promulgated, 613. What makes these so special? Consider that they are given first because they form the basis of all the others. In Judaism we recognize that these mitzvot, which make up how our society functions, is mandated by God. That make Torah, our law, absolute. There is no compromising our principles. We have to be steadfast in how we relate to each other. This is a direct extension from how we relate to Hashem. Notice that there are commandments to how we treat God and how we treat each other. It is important that we remember that there is no difference between them. Torah, our law is Divine. Shavuot reminds us of that. Shavuot II / שָׁבוּעוֹת ב׳ Monday, 6 June 2022 / 7 Sivan 5782 Torah Portion: Deuteronomy 15:19-16:17; Numbers 28:26-31 1: Deuteronomy 15:19-23 · 5 p’sukim · 2: Deuteronomy 16:1-3 · 3 p’sukim · 3: Deuteronomy 16:4-8 · 5 p’sukim · 4: Deuteronomy 16:9-12 · 4 p’sukim · 5: Deuteronomy 16:13-17 · 5 p’sukim · maf: Numbers 28:26-31 · 6 p’sukim · Haftarah: Habakkuk 3:1-19 · 19 p’sukim Our Torah reading for the second day of Shavuot is the same reading for the eighth day of Pesach. We have another reminder of the three pilgrimage festivals. This reading focuses on the offerings for each of those festivals. As such, we must remember that our success and prosperity in life is a result of following Hashem’s commandments and working hard.

The Kohathites had the profound responsibility of transporting the holiest of the Tabernacle objects, the sacred utensils. This was not a mundane task. These objects had to be covered with blue cloths before placing them to be transported. What made this task so awesome was that looking at the actual object may mean death at the hands of Heaven. It was stated in the Torah that if someone besides the High Priest were to glance at these objects, they would die. Some sages don’t interpret this warning literally. Some felt that gazing at them might them seem more ordinary than holy and thus they might lose respect for what they represented. Others felt that gazing at them might put some in a spiritual trance; this would create a false holiness and suggest worshipping that object by staring at it. In any case, it was important that these ministers gave these objects their appropriate respect. This might also be why this clan is mentioned first.

The Temple required a lot of upkeep, such as replacing the gold and silver as the paraphernalia were used and animals and grains for the daily offerings. It also required wood for burning. Israelites could pledge based on their own worth as human beings. For example, a male from ages twenty through fifty would be worth fifty shekels of silver while a woman in the same age bracket would be worth thirty. Those values would be their pledges. Yes, males and females are valued differently. Why? The best explanation is because of productivity. While women’s role was seen as raising and instilling social values into their children, and maintaining the household, men did the more physical labor of farming and herding animals. Consider that the work that men did was more pertinent to physical surviving, producing food and clothing and also building and maintaining structures. • This week's 10-Minute Torah (May 21, 2022): "Parashat Behar" 5782

After the presentation of the Ten Commandments, we are told how to treat a slave. Slaves are the most vulnerable people in society and in Judaism they are treated as people and not overworked or abused. Similarly, we extend this level of respect to a person’s livelihood and land. For whatever reason, some people do not succeed in business like others. Some have situations come up which prevents them from barely providing a sustainable living from their farming or husbandry ventures. These people may be forced to sell their land or go into debt to support themselves. Some even have to sell themselves to others’ servitude to survive. This, however, does not become a permanent situation. As we see every year on Yom Kippur, everyone deserves opportunities to do better. As such, in the fiftieth year when the ram’s horn is sounded at the end of Yom Kippur, the Jubilee (yoval means ram’s horn) returns land to it’s ancestral, rightful, owners. Not only does this make sure that families keep their inheritance from Hashem, but it also prevents a class of extremely wealthy people who buy up this land from becoming too powerful. Should the worst possible scenario happen, that an Israelite has to sell themselves to an alien, their relatives and/or friends need to exhaust any means possible to secure their freedom. This has become the template of Jewish history. We as Jews always have to look out for each other and in dire times, do what we can to save our fellow Jews. It is one of the most important commandments in the Torah.

  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (May 14, 2022): "Parashat Emor" 5782

https://youtu.be/-NCTMmlaix4 Parashat Emor 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת אֱמוֹר 14 May 2022 / 13 Iyyar 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Emor is the 31st weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 21:1-24:23 Emor (“Say”) opens with laws regulating priestly behavior, working in the Mishkan (Tabernacle), and consuming sacrifices and priestly food. It describes the biblical holidays of Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Sukkot, and ends with a story about a blasphemer and his punishment. Triennial year 3 1: 23:23-25 · 3 p’sukim · 2: 23:26-32 · 7 p’sukim · 3: 23:33-44 · 12 p’sukim · 4: 24:1-4 · 4 p’sukim · 5: 24:5-9 · 5 p’sukim · 6: 24:10-12 · 3 p’sukim · 7: 24:13-23 · 11 p’sukim · maf: 24:21-23 · 3 p’sukim · Haftarah: Ezekiel 44:15-31 · 17 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary In our Triennial portion, we once again have a recounting of the yearly cycle of our holidays and festivals. Isn’t it interesting that this is presented right after discussed the sanctity of the priesthood and spiritual contamination! These yearly events are presented multiple times throughout Torah, but specifically here in this context. In Torah, nothing is haphazard; the flow is for specific reasons and purposes. Consider that the juxtaposition is that the sacred times are themselves a situation of purity. Also, the holidays and festivals are there to remind us that we are a nation of priests, and these events help us maintain that purity in our action and deed. Consider also that this parashat comes in the midst of a multitude of mitzvot that command us to be honest and charitable with our fellow, even to the point of loving our fellow as ourselves. What better way to facilitate than to share these occasions?

  • This week's 10-Minute Torah (May 7, 2022): "Parashat Kedoshim" 5782

https://youtu.be/pH8HpieU9E4 Parashat Kedoshim 5782 / פָּרָשַׁת קְדשִׁים 7 May 2022 / 6 Iyyar 5782 (Diaspora) Parashat Kedoshim is the 30th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading. Torah Portion: Leviticus 19:1-20:27 https://tikkun.io/#/r/3-19-1 Kedoshim (“Holy”) opens by instructing the Israelites to be holy. It details dozens of laws regulating all aspects of life, including observing Shabbat, loving one’s neighbor, and leaving portions of a field for the poor. It ends by detailing punishments for certain types of idolatry and sexual misconduct. [1] Triennial year 3 1: 19:15-18 · 4 p’sukim · 2: 19:19-22 · 4 p’sukim · 3: 19:23-32 · 10 p’sukim · 4: 19:33-37 · 5 p’sukim · 5: 20:1-7 · 7 p’sukim · 6: 20:8-22 · 15 p’sukim · 7: 20:23-27 · 5 p’sukim · maf: 20:25-27 · 3 p’sukim · Haftarah for Ashkenazim: Amos 9:7-15 · 9 p’sukim Commentary and Divrei Torah: Sefaria OU Torah Jewish Theological Seminary Kedoshim picks up from the previous portion, Aharei Mot, in discussing various laws and ordinances. During non-leap years, these two are read together since the themes are similar and connected. Some of the parashat continues while much of it introduces us to new mitzvot, most of it relating to the Ten Commandments. While chapter 18 of Leviticus in the portion of Aharei Mot discusses forbidden relationships, Kedoshim discusses consequences, for example. We are also told and reminded of laws that are critical for society to function optimally. We are commanded to respect our parents. Our parents are crucial for our learning morality and functioning properly in society. We are given mitzvot how to behave in business. We are not to cheat others and withhold important information for making the business deal. All this comes to a head as we are told to love our fellow as ourselves. But once again, we are admonished not to gossip. Don’t join with others in the commission of false reporting. Don’t gossip. Like murder, this is an action that, for the most part, can’t be undone. When someone’s life is gone, it’s gone. When someone’s reputation is tarnished, it is near impossible to redeem their esteem; there will always be that doubt. Perhaps talebearing is subtle and less evident and obvious why Torah addresses it so often; murder is pretty obvious. In fact, during Yom Kippur, many of our repentances address this act more so than other acts. Think about it….
