Commentary and Divrei Torah Sefaria OU Torah Rabbi Sacks z”l Jewish Theological Seminary
We can say that this portion is all about what we call Karma. It is interesting that even though Hebrew doesn’t have a word for it, and Judaism doesn’t expressly discuss it, it is an underlying concept. Rabbis and sages throughout the ages have stated that Hashem responds in kind to us.
Moses discusses how Hashem took care of us in the wilderness. But we questioned Him again and again and even though G-d came through for us again and again, we still doubted Him.
At the end of our portion, Moses repeats the second paragraph of the Shema. Some of it is familiar and almost a repetition of the first paragraph, the V’Ahavta. The difference is that latter is commanded in the singular whereas here, the commandments are in the plural. Remember that Moses is speaking to the generation that will conquer and settle the promised land so he has to really drive home the point that in order to be successful, they must fulfill Hashem’s commands individually and as a group.
Let us remember that even today.
