Parashat Ki Teitzei is the 49th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.

Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19

Ki Teitzei (“When You Go Out”) contains numerous laws, more than appear in any other Torah portion. These include laws about the treatment of a captive woman, returning lost objects, forbidden mixtures, the erection of a rooftop fence, rape, collateral, and workers’ wages. [1]

“When you go out to war”.... Hashem expects a lot from us.  G-d has sustained us, cared for us and brought us to this day.  Yes, there have been some horrible tragedies.  But for our part, our end of the covenant, we ascribe to very high morality. This includes going to war. We must keep our camp clean and watch our behavior as best as we can.

Included in this morality, our exhortation to behave as an ethical society continues.  We are responsible for each other and each other’s behavior.  If a traveler comes to our city, we treat them with courtesy, honoring the strangers. If such a person is found murdered outside the city, we have a procedure to absolve ourselves. However, we must acknowledge that had we escorted and accompanied the lone traveler, perhaps such a mishap would not have happened. 

As always, we must always look out for each other.

“Cuando salgas a la guerra”… Hashem espera mucho de nosotros. Dios nos ha sustentado, cuidado y nos ha traído hasta este día. Sí, ha habido algunas tragedias horribles. Pero por nuestra parte, nuestra parte del pacto, nos adherimos a una moral muy elevada. Esto incluye ir a la guerra. Debemos mantener nuestro campamento limpio y cuidar nuestro comportamiento lo mejor posible.

Incluida en esta moral, nuestra exhortación a comportarnos como una sociedad ética continúa. Somos responsables los unos de los otros y del comportamiento de los demás.
